Sai Baba Mantras and Naam Jap
Remembering the name is at the heart of Sai devotion. Sai Baba himself was often heard saying "Allah Malik" (God is the master), and the Shri Sai Satcharitra returns again and again to the value of keeping the Lord's name on the lips and in the heart. According to the Satcharitra, when a devotee once insisted that Baba whisper a secret mantra to her, he told her that he had never given a mantra in anyone's ear, and asked only for faith and patience, shraddha and saburi.
So the Sai mantras below are simple: short names and salutations that anyone can chant, with no initiation needed. This page gives each one in Devanagari, a Roman transliteration and its meaning, followed by the Sai Gayatri and notes on how to chant with a mala.
Om Sai Ram
Transliteration: Om Sai Ram
Meaning: "Om, Sai who is Ram." It joins Sai's name with the name of Ram, which Baba is remembered as honouring. It is the most common greeting among Sai devotees and the easiest naam jap of all, suitable for walking, working or falling asleep.
Om Shri Sainathaya Namah
Transliteration: Om Shri Sainathaya Namah
Meaning: "Om, salutations to Shri Sainath, Sai the Lord." This is the usual mantra for offering flowers, chandan or akshat during the puja, and for japa on a mala. It follows the same form as the names in the 108 names of Sai Baba, each of which ends in "namah".
Om Sai Namo Namah
This four-line chant is sung in many Sai temples and homes, often in a call-and-response style with clapping.
Om Sai Namo Namah
Shri Sai Namo Namah
Jai Jai Sai Namo Namah
Sadguru Sai Namo Namah
Meaning: "Om, salutations again and again to Sai. Salutations to revered Sai. Victory, victory to Sai, salutations again and again. Salutations to Sai, the true guru." The repetition "namo namah" expresses bowing again and again, and the last line names Sai as Sadguru, the true teacher.
Om Sai Shri Sai Jai Jai Sai
Transliteration: Om Sai, Shri Sai, Jai Jai Sai
Meaning: "Om Sai, revered Sai, victory, victory to Sai." This short rhythmic naam jap is popular for group chanting and for long sessions of japa on Thursdays.
Sai Gayatri mantra
Transliteration: Om Shirdi vasaya vidmahe, Sachchidanandaya dhimahi, tanno Sai prachodayat.
Meaning: "We come to know him who dwells in Shirdi; we meditate on him who is existence, consciousness and bliss (sat, chit, ananda); may that Sai inspire and guide us." Like every Gayatri, it is a prayer for a clear and awakened mind. This is the form most often printed for Shirdi Sai Baba, though small spelling differences are common. A different Gayatri, beginning "Om Saishwaraya vidmahe", belongs to the Sathya Sai tradition and should not be confused with it.
The Sai jaikara
Transliteration: Shri Sachchidanand Sadguru Sainath Maharaj ki Jai
Meaning: "Victory to Shri Sainath Maharaj, the true guru who is existence, consciousness and bliss." This cry closes every aarti in Shirdi and is called out at the end of the home puja and the vrat katha.
Baba's own words as remembrance
Two short sayings are not formal mantras but are lovingly repeated by devotees:
- "Allah Malik" (अल्लाह मालिक): "God is the master." These words were often on Baba's lips.
- "Sabka Malik Ek" (सबका मालिक एक): "One God governs all." A saying attributed to Baba that sums up his respect for every faith. More of his teaching is on the teachings page.
How to chant Sai mantras
- Sit quietly before a picture of Sai Baba, facing east or north if you can. Light a lamp and incense if you wish.
- Take a few slow breaths and bring Baba's form to mind.
- Choose one mantra and stay with it for the session rather than switching between many.
- For counted japa, use a mala of 108 beads (plus the larger guru bead). Tulsi, rudraksha, sandalwood or crystal malas are all used; any clean mala is fine. Move one bead with each repetition, using the thumb and middle finger, and do not cross the guru bead; turn the mala round to begin a new round.
- Chant aloud, in a whisper or silently. Steady, attentive chanting is valued more than speed.
- Close with a bow, the jaikara and, if you are doing a full puja, the Sai aarti.
How many times and when
- Mala count: one mala (108 repetitions) is the common daily count. On Thursdays many devotees chant 5, 11 or more malas.
- Thursday: the day of the guru and the day most associated with Sai worship. During the nine-Thursday vrat, chanting Sai's name is part of each Thursday's puja (see vrat vidhi).
- Any time: "Om Sai Ram" and other name mantras need no special time, place or posture, and can be repeated through the day.
Devotees believe that remembering Sai's name brings calm, courage and his guidance. Mantra japa is a spiritual practice and is not a replacement for medical care, honest effort or professional advice.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a guru's initiation to chant these mantras?
No. These are name mantras and salutations that Sai devotees chant freely at home and in temples. Baba himself is remembered as asking for faith and patience rather than formal initiation.
Can I chant without a mala?
Yes. A mala only helps you keep count. Many people chant "Om Sai Ram" through the day without counting.
Can I chant along with the Sai Chalisa or aarti?
Many devotees chant a mantra for a few minutes before reading the Sai Chalisa and close with the aarti. There is no fixed order; keep whatever routine helps you focus.
