Shri Sai Satcharitra
The Shri Sai Satcharitra is the best-loved book about Sai Baba of Shirdi. It is both a biography and a book of devotion: it tells the story of Baba's life, his words and the experiences of his devotees, and it is read by many as a sacred text in its own right. For millions of devotees, reading the Satcharitra is one of the main ways of worshipping Sai Baba, alongside the aarti and the Thursday vrat.
The author: Hemadpant
The Satcharitra was written in Marathi by Govind Raghunath Dabholkar, a devotee who served as a government officer. Baba gave him the name Hemadpant, and he is known by that name to devotees. He wrote the book in ovi, the traditional Marathi verse form used by the saint poets of Maharashtra, so the work can be sung or recited as well as read. The book has 53 chapters, the last of which is a summary of the whole work.
The Satcharitra has been translated into many languages, including Hindi, English, Gujarati, Kannada, Telugu and Tamil. The English version by Nagesh Vasudev Gunaji is especially well known. Some English editions combine certain chapters or treat the last chapter as an epilogue, so the chapter numbers near the end can differ between editions.
How the book came to be written
The Satcharitra tells its own story. In the first chapter Hemadpant describes how he saw Baba grinding wheat on a hand mill at the mosque. Some women of the village took over the grinding, and Baba then told them to scatter the flour at the village border. The villagers explained that Baba was grinding away the cholera that was spreading at the time, and the epidemic is said to have subsided. Hemadpant was so moved that he wished to write down Baba's leelas (divine plays).
The second chapter tells how he came by his name. On his first day in Shirdi he argued with another devotee, Balasaheb Bhate, about whether a guru was really needed. When he reached the mosque, Baba asked what "Hemadpant" had been saying, showing that he knew about the discussion. Hemadpant did not dare ask Baba directly for permission to write, so Madhavrao Deshpande (Shama) asked on his behalf. According to the book, Baba gave him udi, blessed the work and told him to collect the stories and keep notes, saying that Baba himself would write it and Hemadpant would be only an instrument.

How devotees read the Satcharitra
Saptah parayan (reading in seven days)
Many devotees read the whole Satcharitra in seven days, a practice called saptah parayan. A common custom is to begin on a Thursday and finish on the following Wednesday, reading a set number of chapters each day. Groups and temples also hold collective readings, especially around Guru Purnima, Ram Navami and Vijayadashami.
One chapter each Thursday
Others read one chapter, or a few, every Thursday, or read a little every day before the evening aarti. Devotees keeping the Sai Baba Nav Guruvar Vrat often read from it on each of the nine Thursdays, though this is optional.
Simple guidelines
- Read with a calm mind, in a clean place, ideally after a bath.
- Light a lamp or incense before Baba's picture if you wish.
- Read in the language you understand best; the meaning matters more than the language.
- Customs vary, and there is no fixed rule that must be followed.
