About Shirdi Sai Baba
Shirdi Sai Baba was a saint and fakir who lived in the village of Shirdi, in the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra (now officially Ahilyanagar district), from the second half of the nineteenth century until his Mahasamadhi on 15 October 1918. He owned almost nothing, lived in an old mosque, begged for his food and gave away whatever came to him. Yet people of every faith and walk of life came to him for blessing and guidance, and today he is revered by millions of Hindus, Muslims and others across India and the world. Most of what devotees know of his life comes from the Shri Sai Satcharitra, written by his devotee Govind Raghunath Dabholkar (Hemadpant).
Unknown origins
Nobody knows for certain when or where Sai Baba was born, who his parents were, or into which religion he was born. Several accounts and claims exist, but none can be stated as fact. Baba himself rarely spoke of his past, and when asked he gave answers that turned the question back to the spirit rather than the body. What is clear is that his way of life drew on both Hindu and Muslim practice. He lived in a mosque yet called it by a Hindu name, kept a sacred fire as a Hindu ascetic might, and spoke of God as "Allah Malik" as well as of Ram and the guru. Devotees of both faiths felt at home with him, and he never asked anyone to give up their own religion.
Arrival in Shirdi and the name "Sai"
According to the Satcharitra, Baba first appeared in Shirdi as a young man, said to be about sixteen years old, sitting in meditation under a neem tree. The villagers were struck by his calm and his austerity at such a young age. After some time he left the village. Some years later he returned with the wedding party of Chand Patil, a villager from Dhupkheda, which had come to Shirdi for a marriage. When the party stopped near the Khandoba temple, the temple priest Mhalsapati saw the young fakir and greeted him with the words "Ya Sai" (welcome, Sai). Others began to call him Sai as well, and the name stayed. This time he did not leave: he made Shirdi his home for the rest of his life. His return is generally said to have been in about 1858, though the year is not certain.
Dwarkamai, the dhuni and daily life
Baba lived in an old, half-ruined mosque which he called Dwarkamai, after Dwarka, the city of Lord Krishna. There he kept a sacred fire, the dhuni, burning day and night. He gave its ash, called udi, to visitors as a blessing, and the dhuni still burns at Dwarkamai today. Each day he went begging for food at a few houses in the village, mixing whatever he received and sharing it with visitors, the poor, dogs and birds. Devotees such as Bayajabai, the mother of Tatya Kote Patil, served him with great love. Mhalsapati and Tatya often slept in the mosque near him.
In his later years Baba slept on alternate nights at the Chavadi, the village meeting house close to Dwarkamai. Devotees began to escort him there in a joyful procession with music, lamps and a decorated horse, a custom remembered today in the Thursday palkhi at Shirdi. The neem tree under which he first sat became known as Gurusthan, and the garden he tended and watered is Lendi Baug.
Devotees around Baba
Over the years a remarkable circle gathered around him. Mhalsapati, Tatya Kote Patil and Madhavrao Deshpande (Shama) were among the villagers closest to him. Educated visitors from Bombay, Pune and elsewhere also came, among them Nanasaheb Chandorkar, Hari Sitaram (Kakasaheb) Dixit, Gopalrao (Bapusaheb) Buti and Govind Raghunath Dabholkar, whom Baba named Hemadpant. Dasganu Maharaj spread Baba's name through his kirtans. Baba treated the rich and the poor alike, scolded and teased those he loved, and is remembered for asking some visitors for small sums of dakshina, which he then gave away the same day. His guidance is described in the page on his teachings.
Mahasamadhi in 1918
Sai Baba left his body on 15 October 1918, which fell on Vijayadashami, the festival of Dasara. According to the Satcharitra, he had been unwell for some days, and shortly before the end he gave nine rupees to his devoted servant Laxmibai Shinde. He passed away in Dwarkamai, resting against the devotee Bayaji. His body was laid to rest in the stone wada that Gopalrao Buti had been building in Shirdi, in the central place that Buti had meant for an image of Lord Krishna (Murlidhar). That building is now the Samadhi Mandir, the heart of Shirdi. The anniversary of the Mahasamadhi is kept every year at Vijayadashami as Baba's Punyatithi.

Sai Baba's legacy
After 1918 the small village became one of India's great places of pilgrimage. The temple complex is managed by the Shri Saibaba Sansthan Trust, and four aartis are still sung each day as they were in Baba's time. Sai temples have been built in cities across India and abroad, and many families keep the Sai Baba Nav Guruvar Vrat on nine Thursdays. For devotees, his life remains a simple lesson: faith and patience, love for all beings, and trust in the guru.
